"Leads...From Your Competition"

Leads...the life blood of any business. No business can survive long
without them. Business owners often pull their hair out trying to locate
new 'blood'. Once you know where to look...they're everywhere.
One such place is from your competition. I like to call it 'friendly
forced attrition'.

This process can be boiled down to three steps:

1.Locating and identifying your competitors.
2.Performing competitive intelligence (ex: finding their customers).
3.Positioning (or rather repositioning) the competition.

Locating and Identifying Your Competition

This may seem like a straight forward question and answer deal,
and it is in a simple way. If you're a web designer, then other web
designers are your competition...easy enough. But there are also
some not so clear camouflaged competition. Following the web
designer example, some of your comp may be package resellers.
There main business may be web hosting and they offer designing
as a value added service. Who you choose (notice I said YOU
choose) to battle is dependent upon the strengths and weaknesses
of your own product or services.

Ok, you've identified your comp profile, now lets locate actual businesses
and their clients. The most obvious place to start is with search engines.
I prefer using a meta-search engine like Dogpile. Enter your keywords
or keyword phrases and Dogpile will search not one but between
8-12 different search engines and directories. Although they'll list
only the first ten results from each engine, this is often all you need
to get names and url's of 'the enemy'.

Performing Competitive Intelligence

So far we've accomplished the task of creating a comp profile and
we have list of competitors to investigate. So, now open up another
browser window and visit each url you have. Look around and see
what's going on with their site. Are they running any specials? Does
their site look professional or like a 'get rich quick' site? More
important,
does your product or service lend an advantage that you can exploit
to your benefit? Can your product be 'tweaked' to provide an advantage?

Now, let's find some of their clients or at least some associates who
have an interest in that company. The Internet makes this easier than
if you were trying to apply this off-line. Do they have an affiliate
program..
.great join it! "What...you want me to join with the enemy"...YES!
Remember that old saying, "keep your friends close...but your enemies
closer", this couldn't be more truer.

When you join, you'll most likely be given an affiliate link. This is
used to monitor your sales and traffic you send to their site. Now
take that link and use it to locate other affiliates. How? By using
reverse
linking services (i.e. LinkPopularity.com, MarketLeap.com, etc.) ,
you can see other people who have joined their affiliate program also.
You may have to truncate a part of the affiliate url. This is because
your affiliate url will usually contain your tracking ID. It may resemble
something like this: "http://www.comp.com/product/associate.htm?1234".
The 1234 will probably be your identification number used to track sales.
You simply drop everything after the question mark and use that on
the reverse linking services. To cover all your bases, you may even
drop everything after '/product/' and run the truncated url again.

Positioning (or re-positioning) The Competition

Let me state from the beginning...DO NOT openly criticize your
competition. Doing so puts your prospect in a defensive posture.
Why? Because these people were or are still involved with this company
and no one likes to feel like they've made a mistake...even if they
have. So, don't rub it in. This is why I call it 'friendly forced
attrition'.

A better approach would be to state the benefits (not features...know
the difference), of using your service over the present one they're
using. Is your product or service quicker? Is it more reliable? Is it
cheaper (be careful...this sometimes becomes a negative, if your
service is perceived as inferior)? This creates a limited playing field
in the customers' mind. This helps make their buying decision easier.
Now they don't have to choose between 10 or 100 other businesses
offering similar products.

Don't try to totally sell them on the first contact. Two-step the process.
Offer them a free report or some type of sample and have them send
for it via joining your ezine or via auto responder. Once they've done
so, you know for sure that they're at least interested. But remember
it often takes at least seven exposures before most purchases are
made (often more on the Internet), so be prepared to follow up.
Using an auto responder makes this easy. Most will allow you to
set up follow up messages, some limited others with no limit.

It's not uncommon for even small sites to have 100's of affiliates.
So, just imagine what you could do by locating one good competitor
per week? You're only limited by the time and effort you put into
this strategy. Good luck :)

However, the circumstances MUST BE right. What are the "right"
circumstances?

READ ON.

Look at the above Sample of a before-and-after headline. IT CHANGES
the negative INTO positive. It also has a GOOD element of enthusiasm
in it. Enthusiasm is a feature of many powerful headlines. Don't let
a "Negative" Approach FOOL YOU !! Accentuating the positive
AND eliminating the negative IS NO LONGER THE NORM in
advertising. Debate about negative headlines has sometimes been
fierce. The negative must have some good cause for working.

What is it? A headline SHOULD HIT, as directly as possible, right
between the "EYES" of the reader. It's possible to do this with BETTER
accuracy using a negative headline. POINT OUT the problem INSTEAD
OF the solution.

Another sample:

( In the mind's eye of the reader, the thoughts of possible LEAKS
pop in, thereby getting YOUR AD READ!!! )

IF AND WHEN you have that kind of a situation don't worry about
accentuating the negative. Just DO IT!
